Terrible company

We were recommended Apex by our estate agent to handle our house sale. The sale side with Tom Brewer went very smoothly and he was very, very responsive. However, he was unable to assist us with our purchase of a new build property, so he passed the matter to his colleague Kelly Stewart. The first red flag should have been when I didn't receive any contact from Kelly after two weeks and the estate agent ended up chasing them and establishing contact for us. I was then called by Charlie who sent over an estimate which we accepted immediately in order to progress the matter.
We then didn't hear anything for another two weeks. I chased Charlie asking what was happening and he assured me the matter was in hand. After another couple of weeks of nothing we got the estate agent involved again and were sent new client paperwork; as if they hadn't been handling us prior to this point. We really should have walked then because it went from bad to absolutely terrible very quickly. Either phone calls and emails were ignored, not responded to or batted off with vague platitudes. Kelly would sometimes be overly friendly or oddly abrupt and rude when we did manage to get her on the phone; it was like talking to two different people and was very disconcerting.
The matter dragged on and on for months without getting anywhere. After my second complaint the director, Phil May, took over. He initially seemed to be keen to help us make progress, but things again then seemed to slide and we felt very unclear about what was happening and what was outstanding.
At one point I wrote a lengthy complaint to the estate agent as they had recommended them in the first place, and suggested that they might not want to continue their association. This complaint was forwarded to Phil who then accused me of slander (surely a solicitor should be well aware that the written word is libel - another red flag) and essentially made me apologise for hurting his feelings before he continued to work with us. He didn't actually manage to make any progress and it was only the involvement of our IFA which actually got us to the point of being able to exchange and complete. Even the completion process was an odd affair where we didn't hear anything from them until almost 5 pm to say we could take the keys. Luckily, our seller had let us move into the property much earlier in the day, so we weren't left paying extra removal costs, but I'm cynical enough to think that this was a deliberate ploy by Apex to make our move just that bit harder after I'd "hurt their feelings".
We discovered that some of the delay was because they had my name misspelled in multiple ways on multiple documents, as well as an incorrect address which we had corrected with them several times. Even the final invoice had the wrong address on it, which was another added insult to injury. The lack of attention and competence for an established company was really very disappointing.
All in all, stay away from this company. There's something not quite right with the way they operate and working with them has been one of the absolute worst experiences of my life. They didn't deserve a penny of what they got paid and I'll reiterate my previous stance that, in my opinion and experience, they are an embarrassment to the profession.

Staff are very rude

My mother is in the process of selling her property and having finally spoken to someone today from APEX law the lady looking after my mum's case was screaming and shouting at me down the phone and would not let me speak. In the end I put the phone down. Avoid APEX Law at all costs!

Worst conveyancing solicitors

Lost me my sellers with lack of communication, delays, and literally no response to emails, phone calls - please don't ever instruct this firm, they were also very rude overall. I also felt like they didn't know what they were doing half the time, but makes sense as they are not actual solicitors. They then had the check to charge me the full fee!!!!

AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Don't touch them!

Six months of suffering the worst service ever. No communication at all and, at the end I was charged nearly £1,200 more without any notice or explanation.

Needlessly stressfull

We dealt with the Bexleyheath office personnel for our experience, this review relates to that. In summary, they completed the sale and were only slightly about 10% above my other quotes. Was I satisfied and would I use Apex again? No, a firm no.

We used them as recommendation (commission based) from an agent friend of mine. They are associated to a number of agents and so gain a lot of work via their paid commission it seems (standard practice I’m sure).

Early on, we regretted our choice, and come very close to changing solicitors mid process, we thought the chain would move faster so opted not to, if we’d known the actual timescales we’d have certainly moved away. Apex Law’s idea of customer service doesn’t feel 2022, and although I suspect this is a problem of the industry, it doesn’t make it right and it could be a point of difference for them.

To give some examples, we are first time buyers buying a house outside of the threshold a Help to Buy ISA could be used for. So, you’d hope/imagine that when sending out documents they’d not send documents that are irrelevant to us. No, they just dump 10-12 documents on you with zero guidance and zero advice on what needs and doesn’t need signing. It adds to stress, for no reason at all. And this isn’t’ something you’re paying for, the stress should be partially removed by their professionalism, it isn’t sadly.

Unless you’re buying/selling a property regularly, which for most is not the case, this doesn’t help. You can roughly work out what you need to do, but not wanting to slow the process, repeat documents etc. you may wish to contact them. They’ll answer emails, but never in a thorough way, and so you end up ping ponging emails. You cannot phone them or drop in of course. They are busy, I understand that, but this lack of upfront effort, creates reactive issues.

There is a huge assumption that you know exactly what to do, when to do it etc. In a more customer focused 2022, this feels like something from the 1990s.

On two occasions, we voiced these concerns and were met with a very defensive, borderline hostile return. We didn’t bother again, it was hitting your head against a brick wall.

They get a star for generally answering emails the same day, but consider comments above about the need to then ping pong the email for a few more days to get a proper answer.

Overall, as said, I’d take my chances anywhere else in the future, there was nothing horrific and the did get the job done (but hey are also regulated by the SRA I’m assuming), but it was just a needlessly stressful and unpleasant experience dealing with them
