I was put in touch with Amy by the Charity “Inquest” following the death of my 17 year old son. Amy and her team provided the much needed technical/legal knowledge required to get through the inquest process, and the following clinical negligence case with professionalism and determination. Skills that ensured we gained justice for my baby, but also, made sure changes were made on a policy, practice and system level to try and prevent the needless loss of someone else child. What I wasn’t expecting through this process was the very human and empathetic support Amy provided. As a mum, like most parents, I saw it was my responsibility to protect my child from this cruel world. Amy listened calmly as I cried and spoke about the guilt, blame and shame I felt, and reminded me of the many, many failings that were made by institutions set up to treat people. How, no parent in the world, is a medical doctor, teacher, therapist, lawyer, policy maker - this is why we have statutory services. I did everything I could, within my gift, my son did not receive the treatment he needed. As I end my clinical negligence journey I come out of it with answers, justice, change and far, far more healing than I thought possible. While I know I have a long way to go I can see a future when I can thrive whilst also carrying profound traumatic loss.
