I am a Director and award winning Child Care Law Solicitor. I supervise a friendly and dedicated team of solicitors, trainees and caseworkers. Together we strive to provide an excellent and supportive service to our clients at what is probably the most stressful time in their lives. I am passionate about protecting the rights of autistic children and parents within the family justice system, alongside those with other neurodivergent conditions and hidden disabilities and have established a specialist Autism and ADHD team within our Child Care department. My expertise extends to all aspects of family law relating to children and in particular public law (care) cases where social services are involved, deprivation of liberty and secure accommodation. I am a member of the Law Society's Children Law Accreditation Scheme, which qualifies me to legally represent children. I have acted for children of all ages and I am experienced in conducting visits to children including those who are neurodivergent, non-verbal and pre-verbal. My son is autistic and due to his language delay, I developed personal experience of using PECS, communication boards, visual timetables, social stories and basic Makaton. I have a good understanding of the types of sensory and other challenges neurodivergent children (and adults) can experience and I make adjustments to my practice in order to ensure visits are as stress free as possible for the child or young person concerned. My public law cases have involved a wide range of issues including physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, FII, non-accidental injury, addiction, domestic abuse and mental illness. I am a Next Generation Partner and Recommended Lawyer in The Legal 500 where I am described as "incredibly thorough and always on top of the case." I am an experienced advocate and undertake the majority of my own hearings in order to provide continuity of representation to my clients. I place great importance on educating myself, my team and others in relation to neurodivergence and, in particular, autism. I have gained a Level 2 qualification in Understanding Autism, which compliments the invaluable knowledge and experience I have gained from parenting my own autistic child. My goal is to provide the best quality representation and access to justice for neurodivergent children and their families and to ensure that all professionals working with such families are educated about autism and other hidden disabilities. In furtherance of this aim, I am working hard to achieve much needed reform of the family justice system and campaign for compulsory training, best practice guidance and systemic change. I am a co-founder of Family Law Advice for the Neurodivergent Community (FLANC) and in 2023 I won the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Award for Children's Rights in recognition of my ongoing work.

Non responsive team, damaged my position in proceedings.

I had an appalling experience with TVE which I will probably still fail to articulate for a while as it was so traumatising. The team failed to respond to emails, failed to provide advice, damaged my position in the most important proceedings of my life involving my disabled children, they moved multiple legal proceedings for staff holidays without advising me they had done so or taking my instructions on doing so, they failed to send crucial correspondence to the other side, they missed multiple legal deadlines due to staff holiday on multiple occasions. In the end I sacked them and as a result of their professional misconduct I ended up in hospital as their conduct made my illness in pregnancy a lot worse. The staff also regularly failed to give advice about other correspondence that was coming in in parallel to the proceedings and the Partner overseeing the case even told me off for chasing a up on my emails that had remained ignored for weeks. It made a significantly distressing situation much much worse. There were also times when I pushed back on the advice given to me by the solicitor and I had to be quite assertive to correct mistakes. As a result the Partner intervened a few times and changed the plan. I felt that I was doing the strategy and mental load on my own and just simply chasing the solicitor a lot, which for me in a highly stressful situation was unhelpful. Further I was refused services/responses for a variety of excuses such as staff being in court, staff being on holiday, not having legal aid funding. Which meant on one occasion I didn’t get substantive for two weeks during live proceedings and right before a deadline that TVE then missed. I was also refused meetings with my barrister as the firm said they wouldn’t pay for it out of legal aid. Even though my husband’s lawyers were doing this with legal aid. Just appalling I have no words to simply articulate how harmful and damaging the conduct of the regulated professionals at this firm has been, and even though I have instructed new solicitors due to the negligence of the TVE team I am still dealing with the fallout of the mistakes made by TVE.

Thank you for your review. You have already made formal complaints to us which articulate the same issues as those set out in this review. In dealing with those complaints, I carried out a full investigation, very carefully considering your file, and then sending you two lengthy letters covering all of the issues you had raised. You’ll know that I was unable to uphold any aspect of any of your complaints and I have set out for you in writing why the things you complain of didn’t happen at all or didn’t happen in the way you think they did. It is always a huge disappointment to us when a client does not have a positive experience at TV Edwards, and we wish you all the best with the rest of your case. Julian Overton, Managing Partner
