Tax Advice on Employment Settlement
In finalizing a legal settlement on an employment contract I needed some supplementary tax advice. The interactions throughout were relatively positive with the Solicitor involved. Whilst I agreed the hourly rate I foolishly now with hind sight did not get an estimate on total costs. Once the advice had concluded I received a bill that was in excess of the charge from my employment lawyer, despite employment lawyer having a higher hourly rate and significantly more work to complete. The tax advice was not terribly complex and in my view took longer than is reasonable and surely good practice would be to highlight that the bill was going to be very high. When I queried I was met with ill placed humour at my expense and when I complained, the investigation only went as far as reflecting the solicitors views back to me without truly investigating.
