Non Return Of Deposit from Late Son’s Landlord
My son died in a work related accident in Dec 2024. He didn’t leave a will and I was appointed executor to his estate. I approached his landlord to return the deposit on his flat. The landlord refused and on investigation I discovered, he hadn’t placed any of his tenant’s deposits in to a Government Approved Tenancy Scheme. He was breaking the law and taking advantage of vulnerable people. I discussed the situation with Justice for Tenants, who transferred my case to Represent Law Limited. Represent Law were very helpful, they guided me through making my statement, dealt with everything legally and finally took the landlord to court. They ensured the court hearing was held at a court local to me. They explained the process every step of the way. The court hearing was nerve wracking, but the barrister provided by Represent Law was lovely. She calmed our nerves, she said she felt we had a strong case and not to worry. The landlord represented himself and the judge appeared much more supportive of him than us. Shockingly the judge was incredibly bullying to our barrister, yet she stood her ground and made our case. The judge was very apologetic to the landlord when he informed him that he would have to return the deposit to me, paying 2 times the deposit for each year my son was a tenant and all of the court costs. With Represent Law’s help we had beaten this unscrupulous landlord and hopefully made him think twice about ripping any other tenant off in the future. Thank you to the Represent Law team, we couldn’t have done this without you!
