A flexible working request covers a formal, written ask by an employee to alter hours, days or how work is done, typically under the UK-wide right to request flexible working. In plain terms, it is the process an employee uses to seek changes such as a shorter week, different start times, or remote/hybrid working. A solicitor on this area helps prepare and submit the request, reviews the employer’s response, and advises on next steps if the request is refused or conditions change. The work often unfolds through regulated timeframes and formal correspondence with the employer to protect the employee’s rights and ensure a compliant handling of the request.

Flexible Working Request

Where a solicitor protects your position

The key decision is whether to approve or refuse the request, since irreversible changes to working patterns can affect pay, benefits and career progression. A solicitor can identify when a manager has failed to properly consider the request, advise on valid business reasons for refusal, and assist with any subsequent steps such as negotiating alternative arrangements or escalating to an employment tribunal if required. The process is time-bound and hinges on a compliant written response and any agreed variations to terms and conditions of employment.
