I had a case concerning unfair dismissal and discrimination at an overseas campus of a UK university. I engaged Longmores LLP and the results were excellent. The case related to difficult and unusual questions of national jurisdiction as well as the usual UK employment laws and university statutes. The Longmores team showed great diligence and skill in absorbing and understanding the information and the complexities of the case, and gave excellent and measured guidance, including frank advice about likely costs and the likelihood of success. Despite long odds we were successful in the Preliminary Hearing, which focused on the country of jurisdiction; the university then came to a settlement with me. During this hearing, and leading up to it, Longmores provided excellent support, in the legal technicalities, in the practicalities of preparing the very large bundle of documentation, in communications with the Tribunal, with counsel, and with the respondent. They were also highly considerate of my own personal circumstances, and sought to minimise costs in recognition of my restricted post-employment financial circumstances. Their communications with me have also been excellent: the procedure of the case was disrupted by the COVID pandemic and consequent irregular communication by the Employment Tribunal, so Longmores regularly contacted Tribunal and provided updates to me regarding the next stage. The Longmores team also dealt very well with unexpected contingencies: in addition to coping with COVID-related disruptions to the Tribunal process, they also provided and successfully briefed an excellent replacement counsel just a few days before the crucial Preliminary Hearing, when all-important questions of national jurisdiction were to be established.
