Awful customer service

This organisation have been appointed to manage our mortgage switch by the new lender. We had no choice over this and would have much preferred to use our normal solicitor. To say we have had awful customer service is an understatement. We have encountered the following issues:
- Communication has been abysmal with significant delays in responding to email enquiries and complete failure to proving a call back in some instances, resulting in having to contact them to chase multiple times.
- No direct access to solicitors resulting in an elongated process and even simple questions taking the best part of a week to resolve.
- Poor quality and unclear written communication.
- Unhelpful and, at times, rude reception staff.
- Over charging - being charged multiple times for the same item.
- Hidden charges - charges added to invoice without prior agreement.
- No concern or understanding of our situation or apology for the fact that their poor customer service resulted in a £77 charge from the lender PER DAY that completion was delayed.

Don’t touch them - absolutely no confidence in their service

Terrible Experience

Used this company as my Mortgage Lender (Santander) pushed me towards them informing me it was a free service. McVey & Murricane tell you they need to validate your identity via a live call and charge you £60 for this. What they dont tell you is that you can do this for free at any Santander branch. when I queried this and asked for my money back their owner refused and then told my Lender they wanted no further dealings with me causing undue delays in a mortgage application. Be very wary of this firm and their unprofessional and lack of transparency.

Did not meet completion date

I would not use this firm ever again. They did not meet the completion date, they did not act in a timely fashion, and as the client I am now out of pocket for an error that was not my fault. You can’t phone them, they don’t reply to emails, I wouldn’t use them.

Unacceptable Delays and Inefficiency

I must express my disappointment with the service provided by this solicitor, echoing sentiments shared by other reviewers. Regrettably, we were assigned to them by our new mortgage provider for conveyancing, and the experience has been nothing short of frustrating.

The entire process has been excessively prolonged, with seemingly intentional delays that have incurred additional costs during a challenging cost-of-living crisis. Commencing the remortgage process in January, it's disheartening to find myself here in March still awaiting completion. Attempts to contact them by phone have been futile, and the communication through unpersonalized email accounts with generic responses is less than satisfactory.

Having bought and sold several houses in the past, I've never encountered such inefficiency. McVey and Murricane have held onto our mortgage offer for weeks, inexplicably working at their own pace. Despite our fixed rate expiring on 28/02, they were well aware of this deadline but opted to wait until the last possible moment to complete the mortgage, resulting in an extra £700 in costs for us.

Discovering that the settlement was still pending on the day the new mortgage was set to start, after weeks of radio silence, was particularly frustrating. This lack of proactive communication and apparent disregard for the impact on clients facing substantial increases in monthly mortgage payments is unacceptable.

It's evident that McVey and Murricane prioritize their own convenience over the financial well-being of their clients. For those seeking reliable and efficient solicitors, I strongly advise avoiding this firm at all costs.

Mired in Mediocrity & Molasses-like Progress

Unfortunately, our remortgage providers instructed McVey & Murricane who appear to relish taking weaponised incompetence to a new level! They have cost us ~£1500 by dragging out the process and leaving us on a variable rate. Emma W does not know how to attach documents to auto-scripted e-mails. You're advised not to call them directly; it wouldn't matter anyway, because no-one answers the phone. No-one responds to e-mails; even e-mails that try and raise issues with the remortgage case. These should be responded to in a timely manner. They're very quick to pass the blame to anyone else for their mistakes. McVey & Murricane, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves! In this cost of living crisis, causing unnecessary delays costs families thousands, which some may not be able to afford.

Conveyancing: No response to provided numbers or email. By design?

Unfortunately McVey seem to be the default panel solicitor for a number of lenders, you don't know that until after the application is submitted

Last time they refused to accept a hand delivered document and asked I resend it by mail.

This time, via the conveyancer portal the mortgage deed they received one month ago is not marked arrived. ..no amount of chasing has corrected this. I expect to give the impression they're waiting on me in metrics/ KPIs

Its a simple re-mortgage approved in a 3 day window.
The 3rd time I've been forced to engage due to being on lender panel in 3 years and same frustrating slowness every time.

I avoided using Aldermore to avoid McVey and am irritated they're the Scotland default for Skipton too...

No response to generic email and number "your call is important to us", 1 min of engaged and hangs up

2 stars because ID check was fairly pragmatic/ easy, though picking from a calendar or a call if you're a few minutes late would be better

Wouldn’t recommend to anyone

No direct contact allowed, portal queries only (which are not responded to). Staff are extremely rude and lack in the very basic customer service skills when you eventually do get through.

Avoid at all costs

I have sent a lifetime in financial services, dealing with lawyers every day, including having a three person in-house legal team. I used this firm because they were nominated by the bank providing reportage services.

In a word they are the worst firm I have ever had the misfortune to deal with: Everything is done by email and is anonymous - I never even found out the name of the partner in charge (assuming there was one). I rang them five times and never spoke to anyone other than a receptionist who was rude - never received a call-back. Great at charging lots of money for small things and you have to pay up-front or the process stops. Took two months to process a simple remortgage. Even my mortgage adviser couldn't get a response from them other than a four day turn-around email that answered no questions.

Fantastic New Way of Conveyancing

This firm conducts almost all of its work online. Instead of getting one solicitor to work on your case, you will get a team of lawyers and paralegals working for you. Each person will specialise on an aspect of your house purchase. One person for compliance, another on the mortgage details, another for conveyancing. Each person will give you their name and tell you what they will be doing. They are swift and thorough and respond to emails almost immediately. I am more than pleased with them. They are professional, polite and get the job done. If you are looking for a solicitor who can sit down with you over a cup of tea and a custard cream while engaging in small talk and be all fuzzy, then these guys are not for you. If you want the job done, these are your guys. If you want the best results, email these guys, don't phone them.

TERRIBLE - AVOID

Do not use this solicitors!!!!! Unable to contact the Remortgage team apart from email. The emails are so vague and not helpful at all. Each email is not from a named person so no point of contact. I phoned numerous times to no answer and it was continually passed to reception. The receptionist had an attitude and advised this is an online team so they don’t tend to deal with phone calls. The issue I had was the information given in emails was so technical and hard to understand and there was no support. Anytime I phoned the reception asked ‘what was there not to understand’ which I found quite shocking. I emailed specifically asking if everything was in place for 1st November when my new mortgage would start and they replied with one sentence ‘this is scheduled for completion on 1st Nov’. When 1st November came around I was charged a variable rate by my previous mortgage as my new mortgage actually didn’t start until 2nd November so was effectively paying two providers within 48 hours (£1600+) due to them not having my new mortgage start on the correct date. When I emailed to question this they palmed me off with a copy and paste saying I am entitled to a refund that will take A MONTH even though it was due to their inability to start the new mortgage on the correct date.
