Withholding information

Pellys Hitchin Acted on my behalf - there were issues outside of their control so not too much of a concern there; delays happen. However, I have afterwards attempted to obtain some correspondence that they submitted on my behalf and my request was passed to their Data Protection Officer, Ian Kettridge at the Bishop Stortford branch.

I strongly believe that they have been intentionally misleading with me and dishonest in an attempt to avoid providing me with my information. Mr Kettridge even claimed on one day that he had my request printed off and he would be replying within 1 working day, and then several days of chasing later, he finally returns my call and admits he has no idea what information I was asking for.

I have submitted complaints to the Information Commissioner's Office, to Pellys themselves, and reported them to the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

I am not sure what they're trying to hide but they're approach and lack of explanation for the same has left me seriously concerned.

One of the employees admitted that they have no training in the GDPR (data Protection) despite training being, as I understand it, a requirement for businesses in the UK - and I would have thought data protection compliance should be important to a law firm.

I will willingly remove my review of their service if they comply with my request for information.

Bad experience for conveyancing

I wouldn't recommend Pellys, I used them for my conveyancing and had quite a bad experience. The whole thing took 4 months and a half despite not being in any chain, I had to phone my leaseholder myself as Pellys was just ready to send yet another email to follow up after 1 month without any feedback, and just to discover that a letter had indeed been sent but conveniently never received by the solicitor. I also been blatlantly lied to when given an exchange and completion date on the phone, only to be told that nothing was ready when I showed up at the agreed date for signature of the contract. When things finally went through 4 weeks later, Pellys forgot to let me know that my mortgage repayment would still be transferred by the bank even after completion, which put me in overdraft as I wasn't planning for it. All over, these 4 and a half months have been very stressful and not a very smooth experience at all.

Disappointing….

Appointed Pellys to prepare wills for my wife and I together with powers of attorney. My wife has dementia and it was important that I had LPA to look after my wife’s health and finances. Solicitor decided that my wife was unfit to authorise LPA, although ok to agree her will and failed to communicate this to me. Documents dropped in to Royston office by me were lost leading to further delay. Most disappointing was the total failure to return phone calls, reply to emails or messages left with reception. A thoroughly unprofessional and discourteous way of working.

Extremely helpful

Following a recommendation from a friend for a solicitor to assist with divorce proceedings I met with Samantha ODwyer from the West Wickham branch. Sam was extremely professional and knowledgeable throughout the entire process and secured the best outcome for me. Even during the covid lockdown period she worked tirelessly and kept me informed throughout despite the other parties involved being very difficult.

Conveyancing

I had an excellent experience with Pellys (Biggleswade) conveyancing service, during the very busy stamp duty reduction period, and would recommend them to anyone. They were the best conveyancers I have used in nearly 40 years of buying houses. They responded quickly and helpfully to all of our requests and were always on top of the legal issues.

Poor

I have also had concerns regarding Pellys compliance with Data Protection legislation. After they used my personal details without approval, I raised a Subject Access Request. This was sent to Data Protection Officer and their Managing Director. Despite confirming they would respond, they never did. I then raised the issue with the Information Commissioner, who directed Pellys to respond; again they never did so. I then wrote again to their Data Protection Officer, pointing out they had been required to provide information in accordance with their legal obligations. All I ever received was a further email, confirming a response would be provided the next day - some five months later I have received nothing further and find it difficult to understand why a legal firm will not comply with the law.

Executors of a Will

Pellys were the Executors of my fathers Will, the communication from them was appalling. I wrote several emails asking for updates, most of which were ignored. When they did eventually settle the inheritance they wrote to me saying the legacy was from the will of my late Grandfather!!! it was my father!!! I would never recommend this firm, a bereavement is a most upsetting time without the stress of trying to get information from the executors...and then getting a letter stating the wrong relative.
