I went with these guys on citizen advice opinion. On the first call in December 2024 I was told by Louise i got a good case and she told me my rights and what to expect so I felt confident to go with these. On my first face to face with my dad she said the same thing and gave me fault hopes. After giving all the evidence with the house and safe guarding things started changing. Louise changed everything so I agreed to some of it but the last big I didn’t agree with ( which I’m not going to write on here as it’s confidential) then when ever I emailed or rung I kept getting I’m busy with other cases even tho I was a paying client and my case is just as important as the others. I then called another meeting as I was not happy so I brought my mate with me for 2nd ears. On the last offer email Louise said it was a fair offer which I disagreed with so I got an second opinion from another solicitor and she has agreed with me and said no way is it a fair offer as I would be giving 55.55% net so in the end the ex would get more than me and I’m the one left with the children and getting pity child maintenance for 4 children. I had no choice and got a new solicitor as I felt Louise wasn’t fighting my case and was just agreeing with him and his solicitor. I’ve had 2 other solicitors look at my case and they both agreed it wasn’t fair especially as it’s me that’s been paying full mortgage since the day we got the mortgage and the 11 years before that I paid the full rent and bills and he ex paid nothing. I feel was let down and again 1 month I paid £800 butter when I got the invoice i definitely didn’t see £800 worth of work. I feel I was really let down and gave false hope. I felt my case wasn’t important even tho there was safe guarding and police involved. I was under the impression the solicitor works for the client not the client works for solicitor. I’ve now wasted thousands of pound again money i couldn’t afford to lose

I am sorry to hear that you feel that the level of service provided by this firm has fallen below the standard which you would have expected to receive. I have now had an opportunity to speak with Louise, and to review your file. Obviously, for reasons of confidentiality, I cannot go into detail in this response. However, I agree that Louise did change her advice following receipt of further evidence received from you, which was not available during your initial telephone conversation (via CAB) or at the time of your initial consultation with this firm (attended with your father). As you will appreciate advice provided by a solicitor to his/her client can be subject to change as a case progresses and further information regarding the value of assets comes to light. With regards to the percentage you quote, having reviewed recent correspondence and using the value of assets provided by you, I cannot determine how your ex-partner would receive 55.5% of the “net” assets. Louise’s letter of advice of course refers to a gross percentage (rather than net) which is usual practice when acting for the party who will remain living in the family home with the children. This is so that the person remaining in the home receives credit for reducing the mortgage over time. Obviously, house valuations can change over time, and as was explained to you, the amount which would be due to the other party at the time of sale/transfer would depend on the value of the property at that time. That said, I have not been able to reach 55.5% using either a net or gross calculation. As stated above, I would like to apologise if you have been made to feel that your case was not a priority to Louise, and I can assure you that this was not the case at all. Unfortunately, as solicitors, on occasion we must prioritise court deadlines over case work. I can see from the file however that upon receipt of an email from Louise (on Thursday) in which she was forwarding correspondence received from the other side, you attempted to call her shortly before our office closed for the day and was told that she was unavailable. Louise subsequently returned your call out of hours the following day (Friday) after having had an email exchange with you that day in which you expressed your dissatisfaction at the delay. This was after Louise had asked you by email whether it would be possible to return your call on Monday as she had a court deadline to meet that day. I wish you all the best for the future, and hope that you obtain a positive outcome once your case concludes.

Catherine at Bellwethers was outstanding at guiding me through what I considered a very difficult situation.
