This area covers applying for probate or letters of administration without professional help, gathering the deceased’s assets, paying debts and any inheritance tax, identifying beneficiaries, and dealing with banks, HM Courts & Tribunals Service, and the Probate Registry. A solicitor practising in DIY Probate will review and prepare the required forms, advise on tax, and handle any disputes or complications that arise, such as missing assets or contested provisions.
If steps in the process go wrong, assets may be misdistributed or debts and tax remain unpaid, causing penalties or delays. A solicitor provides structured handling of the grant of probate, correct tax submissions, and accurate liability settlement, backed by professional indemnity insurance, regulatory accountability, and protected client accounts.

After the decision to make a will- thank goodness we went to Howells & saw Melodie. She was so lovely, efficient, professional and very mindful while dealing with a very personal delicate subject. Very happy with the easy way the wills were done & I will highly recommend this firm and the way Melodie put us at ease and answered lots of questions putting us at ease. Thank you again for a wonderful service with the added bonus of a house visit.

Ali has been fantastic. We previously went to another company who prepared our Wills and Powers of Attorney. The documents were incorrect and the service was awful. We were recommended Slater Heelis and in particular Ali. Ali gave us detailed advice and prepared new documents. The communication was great and everything was completed quickly. Thank you, Ali.

A thorough and professional service. The solicitor understood exactly what was needed and prepared a clear Deed of Variation that could be acted on by the executors. It took longer than the estimated 10 days, largely due to the unavoidable delays due to the long use of the paper post system.
