International Wills covers wills and estate planning where assets or beneficiaries cross borders, or where the governing law or the place of death involves more than one country. A solicitor practising this area helps you decide which law should apply to your will, ensures a valid will under applicable rules, and coordinates grants of probate or their equivalents. They advise on cross-border inheritance issues, double taxation, and the interaction of international and domestic probate frameworks to protect your wishes after death.
The stakes here are high: an invalid choice of law or a poorly drafted cross-border will can delay or defeat executorship, trigger unintended tax consequences, or force court proceedings in multiple jurisdictions. A solicitor provides guidance on compliant drafting, relevant registries, and the process to obtain probate or the equivalent in the intended jurisdiction, safeguarding the client’s intended distribution and reducing the risk of disputes.

I would like to thank Winston Solicitors in particular Emily Spencer for the professional manner in which she attended to my late mother's affairs and her preparation of a will. I do not live in the UK but everything was done in a seamless fashion.

Ali has been fantastic. We previously went to another company who prepared our Wills and Powers of Attorney. The documents were incorrect and the service was awful. We were recommended Slater Heelis and in particular Ali. Ali gave us detailed advice and prepared new documents. The communication was great and everything was completed quickly. Thank you, Ali.

A thorough and professional service. The solicitor understood exactly what was needed and prepared a clear Deed of Variation that could be acted on by the executors. It took longer than the estimated 10 days, largely due to the unavoidable delays due to the long use of the paper post system.

We have recently used the Mapperley branch to sort out Grant of Probate and will also be using them for conveyancing. Jasmin Marshall who dealt with the probate was very professional but lovely at the same time. She put us at ease at what was a difficult time for us, and made the whole process much less painful. From start to finish it only took 3 weeks for probate to be granted and during that time we were kept fully informed. I can’t thank Jasmin and the team enough for what they did.
