Succession matters cover the distribution of a deceased person’s estate in England after death, including proving who administers the estate (probate) when there is a will, or obtaining letters of administration if there isn’t. A solicitor handles applying for probate or administration, identifying assets and debts, valuing the estate, dealing with HM Revenue & Customs for inheritance tax, gathering assets, paying liabilities, and distributing the residue to beneficiaries or according to the will or the rules of intestacy. They may also assist with executors’ duties and potential disputes.
