Katie Brown

Partner and Head of Social Welfare

Accepting new clients via ReviewSolicitors

Having joined TV Edwards in 2013, Katie now heads up the Social Welfare department. An experienced housing and public law solicitor, Katie represents clients across a range of housing law. In possession work, Katie represents clients facing eviction for rent arrears, anti-social behaviour, sub-letting, breach of tenancy, and under the “section 21 notice” procedure. Within those cases, Katie helps tenants avoid eviction by bringing counterclaims for poor housing conditions, harassment and breach of tenancy deposit rules. In the case of Lees v Kaye & Dixon [2022] EWHC 1151 (QB) Katie acted for a homeowner who was found by the High Court to have been evicted in breach of a breathing space. It was only the second time that the Court had considered the debt respite scheme, which brought in breathing spaces in May 2021. Katie’s background training in welfare benefits law means she can provide effective representation to clients facing eviction for rent arrears caused by benefits issues. In many of her possession cases Katie uses her benefits knowledge to help clients resolve their Housing Benefit or Universal Credit issues and obtain substantial backdated benefit to reduce their rent arrears.

DON'T BOTHER, FIND A BETTER FIRM

They are unprofessional. I felt that some interactions were ingenuine. I wish I read Google reviews before I rushed to see them, wasted my money on them!

Dear Anonymous Thank you for your review. We have checked with Katie and we understand that you met with Katie’s colleague at our Whitechapel office (rather than our Falcon Road office) and also you were provided with advice and assistance under the Legal Help scheme. This is a scheme run by the Government and is free, so we are a bit confused as to why you have written that you “wasted your money” as you did not pay for our legal advice and assistance. We also understand that unfortunately you were given negative advice in your case. Whilst this will always be disappointing to hear, we believe that we provided value in your case, as you are now better able to make a decision about how best to proceed with your situation. Kind Regards TV Edwards

Housing & Property

Support with Social Housing Case

The TV Edwards team provided outstanding support in helping my disabled brother with his homelessness claim to the Local Authority. From the very beginning, they demonstrated a high level of professionalism, compassion, and expertise. All of our queries were answered promptly, and we always felt informed about the progress of the case. Important steps were not delayed and my brother’s circumstances were clearly and effectively presented to the Local Authority. The team handled everything with great professionalism and sensitivity, particularly given my brother’s vulnerability. I would recommend this firm to anyone who needs knowledgeable, responsive, and compassionate legal assistance, especially in matters involving housing or vulnerable individuals.

Quite simply astounding

Katie Brown and her team at the Whitechapel branch of TV Edwards are quite simply astounding. She's tenacious, brilliant and has a deep understanding of the law. More than that, her calm demeanour and excellent client skills were exactly what I needed under the fire of fierce litigation. Thanks to her and her team, we achieved a result that was not only a win for me but for the thousands of people who will now be protected by case law. She is a superb solicitor to have on your side and an excellent person to know.
