Probate covers arranging the winding up of a deceased person’s estate, including applying for the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, collecting assets, paying debts, and distributing what remains to beneficiaries. A solicitor in this area drafts and authenticates the necessary documents, identifies the estate’s liabilities, handles inheritance tax where needed, liaises with executors and beneficiaries, and guides clients through court procedures if contested or complex. The work is shaped by the estate size, tax rules, and asset types.

“I have recently used Howells for obtaining a Grant of Probate and then the sale of my Late Fathers flat. I felt that Howells , Lindsey R for the GoP and Emmanuella W for conveyancing, kept me informed throughout the whole process. I received a very professional service which all went very smoothly and I would highly recommend to anyone. The costs were also very competitive. Thank you !”

“As executors of our Godmothers Estate my brother and I experienced several departments. Even though we are both professional people the task of Executor is still quite daunting, especially when dealing with several beneficiaries and grieving the loss of a loved one. The MD team made this process much easier and straightforward. Emma guided us through and Gina was most helpful in conveyancing when dealing with a house transaction and a house buyer wanting to move quickly. We only had one hiccup in a letter sent to a beneficiary in mistake which was resolved very quickly. We have recommended you to several friends and colleagues from our super experience with your team. I know one of which is currently using you for her Uncle's Estate.”

    Frequently asked questions

    How are these solicitors ranked?

Rankings are worked out mainly from client reviews: the ratings clients give and how recent the reviews are, with reviews about Probate counting most. We also take into account how much of a firm's work is in Probate.

How often are the rankings updated?

Twice a week, every Thursday and Sunday, so new reviews are reflected quickly. This list was last updated on 29 October 2026.

Is it free to compare solicitors?

Yes. Comparing firms, reading reviews and sending your case summary to the firms you choose is free.

    Who will see my details?

Only the law firms you choose to send your case summary to. Nothing is shared until you press send, and your details are never shown on this page.

Why can I only send my case summary to some law firms?

Only law firms that have signed up to receive case summaries through us can be sent one. You can still contact any other firm directly from its profile.

How many Probate solicitors are there in England?

We have ranked 3,357 law firms for Probate in England, listed in order on this page.
