Crime/ Criminal Defence

Michael Smalley

I would like to share my experience with Michael Smalley from VHS Fletchers, who acted as my Solicitor Advocate during my recent Fitness to Practise case. From the very start he was calm, approachable and incredibly reassuring. He spoke with real experience and confidence, and he took the time to fully understand my situation, the allegations, the evidence and the background. He then explained clearly what steps I could take to support my case. Michael did all the hard work behind the scenes. He chased up references and testimonials, organised my bundle, and put together all of my evidence and my defence. He went through my reflections, statements and training records in detail, and then arranged meetings where he explained the plan, what he needed from me and what I should expect. At every stage he answered my questions and made sure I understood what was happening. During the hearing he was an enormous support. Before I gave my evidence he went through every area of concern with me, helped me prepare and made sure I felt as calm as possible. Throughout the hearing he explained each step and what the panel would be doing at that moment. He took a genuine interest in my personal situation and I could tell he cared. At one point when I became nervous he noticed and asked for a break which made a big difference. Looking back at previous fitness to practise outcomes in cases similar to mine, the result I received was far better than I expected. I believe that is down to how carefully and effectively Michael handled my case. Michael was sharp, well prepared and even picked up on an error the opposition made when citing case law. He helped deal with and dismiss allegations, including some I originally admitted to, by presenting the facts properly and fairly. I am extremely grateful for everything he did and would recommend him to anyone who needs someone steady, knowledgeable and committed to securing the best possible outcome for their client.

PLEASE AVOID THESE COWBOYS THEY DESTROYED MY APPEAL CASE

Please avoid these people at all costs. They are unprofessional, rude and disrespectful to clients. They messed me around for seven and half months with my appeal against conviction at Derby Crown Court. They kept swapping solicitors on me. Sent a solicitor to court to represent me on one occasion Nicola Draper. Then lied to my face about the fact that Nicola had done no prior research on my case. Denney Lau was representing me previously but was dealing with another case. Three solicitors in total represented me on different occasions. Denney Lau, Nicola Draper and then later William Bennett. They also left it until the night before to tell me that my solicitor had been changed again. They closed so I had to ring on the morning of my hearing. This happened frequently. Andrew Wesley wrote a document about me and my case that was full of lies. Victim blaming me using what was said in court at my sentencing against me. Using comments I made to the other party that was used as evidence against me. Finding any excuse not to carry on with my case. I didn’t make it clear I wanted to appeal this at my sentencing. I plead guilty. This wasn’t black and white there were so many grey areas and mitigating circumstances to this. I wasn’t thinking about any of that then. But this was all issues that I’d discussed with Denney initially that he saw no issue with any of this in relation to my appeal and said I had a strong case to win my appeal based on all the evidence of serious misconduct against me by several other parties in this including Derbyshire Police, East Midlands CPS, Derbyshire Courts and another solicitors practice involved who represented me previously. Even Derbyshire Probation Services. VHS Fletchers knew all of this when they agreed to help me and fight my case for me. Denney knew all of this had taken my case on and saw no issue. Andrew Wesley seems to bully, blackmail and emotionally and verbally abuse his hardworking and dedicated staff. Who just want to get justice for their clients. It was obvious Denney Lau and William Bennett who represented me later on wanted to help me and try and get justice for me. But how could they working underneath such a corrupt tyrant as Andrew Wesley. Andrew tried to bully and manipulate them into dropping me and my case. He tried to bully and coerce Denney Lau and William Bennett into dropping my case because this case was no longer financially viable to him. My case and I was no longer financially lucrative to him. But it isn’t about money it’s about your client and their needs and putting them and more importantly their case first and getting them justice comes before anything. Andrew Wesley and Jon Hullis are just too misogynistic and unintelligent to understand that. They lack the intellectual maturity to understand morals and ethics. Maybe it’s because they are male. Their egos get in the way of what is morally right. I’m definitely confused as to how these two cretinous morons run a business. Then they dumped me and my case without good reason in May 2024. Then VHS Fletchers refused to explain to the court that they dumped me and my case and it wasn’t my choice to abandon this. I did try and make a formal complaint about Andrew Wesley’s behaviour to Jon Hullis the other partner at VHS Fletchers. Jon Hullis refused to investigate my serious complaints about Andrew Wesley and refused to engage with me further. In closing just avoid these idiots they don’t know the law. They are amateurs. They have no interpersonal skills. No manners or morals. When their best solicitor Denney Lau leaves the practice to go solo as even he had enough of their vile behaviour and he had enough of trying to help clients whose cases VHS Fletchers single handily and deliberately sabotage like mine for no good reason it speaks volumes about what kind of people they are. ANDREW WESLEY JON HULLIS YOUR BALLS ARE MINE DARLINGS. I’LL HAVE BOTH YOURS FOR EARRINGS AND CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENTS SO I’D RUN AND HIDE IF I WAS BOTH OF YOU. I would give these vile, disgusting shysters NO STARS on anything.

PLEASE AVOID THEY DESTROYED MY APEAL CASE

Please avoid these people at all costs. They are unprofessional, rude and disrespectful to clients. Denney Lau (who no longer works with VHS Fletchers) was asked at court to represent me regarding my case for appeal. As I had gone to court unrepresented a couple of times. I wanted to represent myself. But the Judge asked if VHS Fletchers would step in which they happily agreed to do. We were going backwards and forwards to court for months and months. Going over the same legal issues over and over again. They passed my case around to various solicitors. It was never the same solicitor on my case. Despite one solicitor Denney Lau doing all the research into my case beforehand. So to me it makes sense to have one solicitor representing you at all times. At one particular hearing at court they sent a female solicitor called NICOLA DRAPER who did not come prepared. She had done no work on my case even though I asked Patrick Fisher the junior solicitor the night before if she had done her research I was told she had. VHS Fletchers lied to me as when she turned up it was clear she knew nothing about my case. Andrew Wesley wrote a document about me that was factually and legally inaccurate. Then they dumped me and my case without good reason in May 2024. Then VHS Fletchers refused to explain to the court that they dumped me and my case and it wasn't my choice to abandon this. Unpleasant and unprofessional. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Derek Brown handling of my case

My first time with this firm after being a long time Johnsons client, today to my surprise I had a serious case discontinued and this was solely down to the handling and advice I received from Mr Brown's services...Excellent and a very happy man.
