Academies are state-funded schools in England that operate independently of local authority control, funded directly by central government through an academy trust. A solicitor in this area helps with converting a maintained school to academy status, drafting and negotiating the funding agreement with the Secretary of State, and establishing the academy trust's articles of association and scheme of delegation. They also handle land and asset issues, staff transfers and pensions, admissions and safeguarding policies, and major commercial contracts and procurement on behalf of the academy trust, including potential mergers or transfers of governance materials.
