My brother and I used Stephanie at BB&C to do the probate application and inheritance tax returns on my mum's estate. It was not a complicated estate but it did require using the inheritance nil band rate, as the estate fell between the default inheritance tax free allowance of £325k and the extended allowance of £500k that applies if the main property is passing to direct descendants, requiring completion of several additional IHT forms. I think we could probably still have done it ourselves had we had infinite time and patience for form filling and research, but just dealing with the drudgery and endless correspondence with financial and other institutions (e.g. utilities, council tax etc) required by estate administration was enough for us. Employing Stephanie cost us approximately 1.25% of the estate's value and for the aggravation and -- perhaps especially -- the possibility of making a costly mistake that it saved us I would say it was definitely well worth the expense. In the end, once the forms went in, probate was granted in just 2 days, which must be some kind of record and, I think, attests to the thoroughness of everyone at BB&C. I would have no hesitation whatsoever recommending either BB&C or Stephanie again. Both of us were very happy with their service. As a result, we are also employing them both for the conveyancing of my mother's property and one of our wills. My overwhelming sense of BB&C is that it is a very long-standing local firm with an ethos for good service that is very well trusted locally. My experience of them was entirely different in this regard from a number of London solicitors that I have used that either come and go every few years or faceless corporations with offices all over the country that you have to chase at every stage in the process. We never had to chase BB&C: if I weren't 60 miles away, I would use them for all my own affairs on the basis of this experience. If I could find a local outfit with a similar ethos I would use that outfit.
