★☆☆☆☆ – Poor legal advice, followed by an even worse complaints process My experience with Angels Solicitors in Coventry has left me with very little confidence in either their professional competence or their willingness to accept responsibility when things go wrong. I instructed the firm to advise on recovering possession of a property. I expected competent legal advice, proper consideration of the relevant facts and action taken in my best interests. Surely, these are the most basic expectations anyone should have of a solicitor. Instead, I received advice which was fundamentally flawed, resulting in a Notice to Quit being served without any proper legal basis. Rudimentary enquiries were not undertaken before the firm recommended a course of action with potentially serious consequences. However, the most disturbing aspect of my experience was not the original advice, but the firm's response when challenged. Their initial complaint review contained factual inaccuracies. When these were pointed out, the explanation was that the review had not been comprehensive. Quite how a solicitor can consider an incomplete and inaccurate investigation an acceptable response to a formal complaint is beyond me. The subsequent review was scarcely more reassuring. Rather than properly confront the issues raised, the firm appeared determined to defend its position, regardless of the legitimate concerns presented. Mistakes can happen in any profession. What distinguishes a reputable firm is how it responds when those mistakes are brought to its attention. In my experience, Angels Solicitors failed that test spectacularly. I have now escalated my complaint to the Legal Ombudsman because I have lost confidence in the firm's ability or willingness to examine its own conduct objectively. Solicitors charge for their professional expertise, judgement and integrity. When the quality of advice is called into question, clients should not then have to battle the same firm simply to obtain a credible explanation. My experience raises a very simple question: if a firm cannot properly investigate complaints about its own work, how much confidence should a prospective client place in that work in the first place? I certainly would not entrust Angels Solicitors with another matter, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering instructing them to think very carefully before doing so.
