Short leases cover leases of properties for relatively brief terms and the way those terms affect rights, charges and future options. A solicitor in this area drafts or negotiates short leases, reviews existing leases for renewal or extension, and handles issues around service charges, ground rent, and forfeiture. They also advise on extending a lease or purchasing the freehold, and on applying to the Land Registry to register changes. The work often involves coordinating with freeholders, managing agents, and housing associations.
