Top 10 of 2,123 law firms for Pleas, Crime/ Criminal Defence

Law firms ranked by client reviews

This work covers the plea stage in criminal cases in England, where a defendant may decide to plead guilty or not guilty and negotiate with the CPS about charges and sentence. A solicitor practicing in pleas advises at every stage, represents the client at Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court plea hearings, handles bail applications, and presents mitigation to the court. They gather evidence, review disclosure, and coordinate with experts or witnesses to support the chosen path.

What a solicitor handles in these matters

They identify viable pleas, assess the strength of the prosecution case, and advise on potential sentence outcomes and defences. They draft and lodge plea explanations, request further disclosure if needed, negotiate with the Crown Prosecution Service, arrange pre-sentence reports or specialist assessments, and coordinate mitigation to secure the best possible outcome. They accompany the client to hearings, cross-examine where appropriate, and manage timelines for disposition and appeal if required.

John Stokes

Tagged solicitor John Stokes

I was a victim of a crime carried out by a gang. I was forced to protect and defend myself against one of them. They falsely accused me of assault. It was a leghty case but Mr John Stokes was very respectful and patient with me throughout the ordeal. He took time to go through all of my evidence and was able to file a character reference on my behalf to court. After taking the case to trial, I was completely exonerated of all charges. As I told John, if I get in trouble again, I will call on him. Nice work John.

Sonia Weaver

Tagged solicitor Sonia Weaver

I had a very complex case against me where I was facing 4 criminal charges ranging from assaulting a police officer to obstruction and section 4 public order offences. Sonia Weaver and Joanna Curtis expertly guided me through the legal process and gave very frank, honest advice, with likely outcomes. Eventually the legal advice boiled down to two options. Firstly that, I did have a reasonable chance to plead not guilty and I would have a good chance at trial to completely clear my name. Or secondly plead guilty and use the same evidence to act as mitigation, with a prospect that I could get a judgement and sentence in one day, rather than continuing to trial and thus making my case far more expensive. Sonia understood my financial position and took a long time to explain every detail very clearly with the eventual advice being; “look the case is very complex and not black and white and would hinge entirely on a court’s interpretation of certain facts.” She also understood that I was more minded to get everything over and done with as quickly as possible as had multiple other bigger fish to fry. In the end I decided to plead guilty following further excellent work from Joanna Curtis on the day at court. Joanna expertly managed to convince the prosecution, that 1 of the charges had no reasonable prospect and managed to get that dropped entirely, she then further managed to get the prosecution to accept that the public order offence shouldn’t be a separate offence in its own right, rather an aggravating factor in any assault. Therefore, I was only charged with 2 offences rather than four. Joanna, then went on to convince the court that there were substantial mitigations, that should be seriously considered, as these would have potentially amounted to enough evidence to plead not guilty anyway. The court’s starting position was an undisclosed fine and 200hrs of unpaid work or a potential custodial sentence. Joanna’s diligence meant that my sentence was only 75hrs of unpaid work and a paltry fine of £199. The court also rejected the prosecution’s claim for compensation and didn’t award any. Although, if I’d had the time and money I feel like I would have pleaded not guilty and taken it to trial, it was my decision to get it over and done with and accept that I’d become another victim of the UK courts “guilty tax” I therefore can’t thank both Sonia and Joanna enough for ensuring a palatable outcome. I would like to wish Joanna all the best in her future career as a barrister, as she really did go the extra mile in my case and is obviously going to be a great addition to the the criminal justice system. I’d like to thank Sonia for her expert professionalism, frank honesty and sound legal advice, she really is a credit to your organisation.

Douglas McConnellErin Miller

Tagged solicitors Douglas McConnell and Erin Miller

I cannot recommend Duncan & McConnell Solicitors highly enough. Doug McConnell has represented me across multiple cases since I was 16 years old. Even though I hadn’t required any legal services for 10 years, I called him a month ago regarding a new situation and he remembered me instantly. When my legal aid was unfortunately denied, Doug still stepped up to look after me because of our long history together, and they actually represented me completely for free. Doug represented me at the first hearing. Erin Miller took over to represent me today, and she was absolutely amazing. She called me before court to double-check every detail and completely reassure me. She then handled my pleading with a great outcome and emailed me the result immediately after. To represent me for free when I was stuck shows a level of loyalty and genuine care that is incredibly rare. The whole team are highly professional, well-mannered, and truly dedicated. I would quite literally never use another solicitor.
