Attempted murder covers acts aimed at killing another person where a person has taken a substantial step towards that goal. A solicitor practising in this area handles cases charged as attempted murder, advising on bail, reviewing police disclosures, and guiding the client through all stages from initial investigation to trial in the Crown Court or, in some instances, a guilty plea. The work involves assessing evidence, building a defence or mitigation, instructing experts, and liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service and the court to protect the client's position.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
The matters involve complex evidence, admissibility issues, alibi and identification challenges, and potential disclosure disputes. The solicitor handles strategy, applies for missing or expert reports, and negotiates with the prosecution on plea or case management while ensuring procedural deadlines and rights of audience are observed.
