We've had a turbulent experience, to put it lightly, trying to purchase a flat. After a failed attempt because of leaky roofs, and a second one because our dog, we've finally been able to buy a flat!! And it truly is thanks to Kirsty; she was an absolute saint throughout, she is so knowledgeable and truly was on your side every step of the way. Her team is fantastic and really patient, and trust me there was a lot to be patient about. I can't recommend them enough. Thank you again

I was hesitant when contacting Goodlaw initially as after my medical error I was really knocked down and not expecting a positive resolution, James and his team were supportive throughout and were clear and helpful, walking me through my contribution to the case they were building against the hospital. They took the burden of the paperwork and only contacted me when necessary after my initial consultation. It took a number years (as they had advised) and they kept at it providing updates which led to a settlement that not only took some of the sting out of the medical negligence I suffered but also made me feel valued and heard which really mattered and made a huge difference to my state of mind.

One thing I have learnt from buying a house is that you are only ever as strong as the weakest solicitor in the chain. Unfortunately, our experience with the buyers’ solicitors was extremely frustrating and, despite us not being their client or paying this firm for any work, their lack of communication and proactivity had a significant impact on our transaction. There were multiple occasions where the solicitor appeared to take unplanned leave without an out-of-office message, and there was no clear communication from their assistant or the firm to let anyone else in the chain know they were unavailable. On one occasion, this resulted in delays of around 2–3 weeks. There also appeared to be a lack of urgency in reviewing documentation. Documents were left for several days before being reviewed and, even once reviewed, further action was sometimes not taken for another number of days. In a property transaction where several parties are working towards a completion date, this lack of proactivity can have a huge knock-on effect. We also experienced situations where information being communicated to the estate agent differed from what was being communicated to our own solicitor, or where our solicitor was not receiving updates at all. This made it extremely difficult for the chain to understand what was actually happening and caused unnecessary delays and frustration. I appreciate that property transactions can be complicated and that solicitors have busy caseloads, but communication, ownership and keeping other parties informed are fundamental to the process. Ironically, we were fortunate that we were not paying this firm for their services. Had we been their client and paid for this level of service, I would have been seriously questioning the value received and would certainly have been considering making a formal complaint. Overall, our experience was characterised by a lack of communication, poor proactivity and a level of professionalism that, in my opinion, fell well below what you would expect when dealing with a property purchase. I would strongly recommend anyone considering using this firm to establish exactly how they manage holiday/absence cover and how they communicate with the rest of the chain before instructing them.
