General crime work covers defending people charged with criminal offences in England, from initial police bail applications to trial in magistrates’ or Crown Court, and through to any appeals. A solicitor in this area interviews clients, negotiates with the Crown Prosecution Service, reviews disclosure, advises on pleas, prepares witnesses, drafts statements, handles cross‑examination, and coordinates with counsel where required. The work is shaped by the seriousness of the offence, the court system, and relevant criminal procedure rules.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
A solicitor handles case management across magistrates’ and Crown Court proceedings, negotiates plea terms, reviews disclosure and evidence, drafts and files statements, prepares witnesses, conducts or supports cross‑examination, liaises with the CPS, and coordinates with counsel for trial strategy and sentencing considerations.
