This work covers homicide investigations into alleged murder and the process that follows, from initial police inquiry to potential charge and court proceedings. A solicitor in this area handles police interviews under PACE, disclosure requests, and interactions with the Crown Prosecution Service to secure charges and prepare the case for trial. They advise on bail, review evidence, witness handling, and the involvement of counsel, experts, and ancillary agencies in preparation for a Crown Court trial.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
In homicide investigations, the solicitor navigates complex evidential and procedural issues: police investigation timelines, admissibility of evidence, disclosure regimes, and the interaction with CPS charging decisions. They coordinate with investigators, experts and counsel to frame the case strategy, manage witness contacts, and ensure compliance with rules governing cross-examination and trial readiness. The role hinges on handling sensitive information within statutory frameworks and safeguarding the client’s position at each stage.
