This work covers offences of a sexual nature and indecency within England and the broader criminal context, from allegations of sexual assault to indecent exposure and child protection concerns. A solicitor in this area reviews evidence, advises on charging or defence strategy, drafts pre-trial applications, represents clients in magistrates’ or crown court proceedings, and handles disclosure, sentencing considerations, and appeals. It also involves liaising with police, prosecutors, victims’ services, and experts to safeguard the client’s position.
Why this work is usually handled by a solicitor
The core risk is serious, irreversible consequences from conviction, a potential for lengthy or complex proceedings, and regulatory scrutiny. A solicitor provides professional indemnity and regulatory accountability, manages rights of audience in court, and coordinates with experts and the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure appropriate conduct of the case and compliance with procedures.
