Challenging grade classifications covers disputes over the grades awarded in exams and assessments, including GCSEs and A-Levels, and the steps taken when a result seems incorrect. A solicitor in this area helps pupils and their families challenge a grade by preparing evidence, drafting representations to the awarding body, and navigating appeals or review processes to seek a corrected grade. The work may involve addressing clerical errors, alleged misapplication of marking criteria, or alleged maladministration by the examination board or school. Outcomes depend on established procedures with strict deadlines and formal review stages.
The stakes are high because an incorrect grade can alter university places, apprenticeships, or employment prospects. A solicitor ensures evidence is properly structured, deadlines are met, and the correct procedures are followed, including any required communications with the awarding body, school or college, and, where relevant, regulatory bodies such as Ofqual.
