This area covers disputes over how a degree is classified, including disagreements with marks, grade boundaries, or overall classification decision after assessments. A solicitor helps with formal academic appeals, drafting grounds for challenge, gathering evidence (assessments, coursework, moderation notes), and submitting the appeal to the university’s regulations or examination/awards boards. They may also liaise with the university’s academic appeals office and, if necessary, pursue redress through the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA).
A degree classification decision can affect future career or study options; the solicitor explains the process, deadlines, and post-appeal consequences, and ensures any misapplication of policy or miscalculation is addressed within university procedures and, if needed, through the OIA.
