This work covers applying for and managing visa status for professional sportspersons who are sponsored to work in the UK. A solicitor in this area assists with securing sponsorship, completing visa applications under the Tier 2 (Sportsperson) route, gathering evidence of the applicant’s sport qualifications and achievements, handling sponsorship certificates (COS), and addressing any changes in employment or contract terms. They may also advise on switching to or from Tier 2, extensions, and compliance with UK immigration rules to avoid curtailment of leave or future visa refusals.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
The solicitor handles the provisions around sponsorship, certificate of sponsorship requirements, cap considerations (if applicable), evidence of sporting credentials, and any UKVI guidance on ongoing compliance. They manage interactions with sponsor organisations, and ensure that attachments such as contracts and performance records align with the visa criteria and any sport-specific regulatory bodies. The professional also advises on deadlines, potential appeals or reconsiderations, and the implications of changes in contract terms on visa eligibility.
