Our family appointed Thompsons to manage a damages claim which tragically related to a death in the family following a road traffic accident. The case was complex and took quite some time to settle. February 2023 I had a biopsy, which confirmed a previous suspected diagnosis of malignant epithelioid mesothelioma. With a terminal diagnosis, at the age of 80 years old, the last thing on my mind was to claim for compensation for my exposure to asbestos. I was being treated at the Northen Cancer Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne. Almost everyone I encountered, pressed me to follow up a compensation claim. This resulted in me contacting my trade union; I had continued to remain a member in the retired group.

Gill wasted no time and was soon in my lounge recording my full employment history. This was no short visit, well exceeding an hour, and thorough beyond belief. Of course nothing is certain, but I am of the opinion that my critical exposure occurred when I was an apprentice around 20 years old. Gill’s ability to type as fast as I could speak, can only be described as phenomenal. No time at all was wasted taking notes, with the need for proof checking, oh no ! Whatever I said, was accurately down in print straight away.

I am convinced that the thoroughness of the evidence collection was largely the reason why the defendant accepted liability promptly and awarded a generous interim payment. It is a fact, that my career was totally working in power stations, owned / managed by one organisation, albeit not specifically as a lagger.
From that point Gill’s, expertise was directed towards maximising my claim, with a clear determination to get the maximum payout for me. It’s somewhat of a sad fact that there is no shortage of people pursuing asbestos related claims, such that Gill’s entire time, is spent on mesothelioma claims. Having lost a close family member to Mesothelioma in 2021, and the trauma this caused my family at the time and continues to do so, it was suggested, by our own family solicitor, that we could receive some legal advice from experts in Mesothelioma and Asbestos, and they recommended we approached Thompsons Solicitors LLP as they are considered experts in this field.

The process started a couple of years ago and has recently concluded. Although it has been a lengthy process, we understand why it took this length of time to gather the facts, find evidence, interview witnesses, prepare witness statements and meet with the solicitor many times over this period - it was important to do the background work firstly to strengthen the claim. The claim was dealt with by Stuart Latham of the Newcastle Asbestos Team, and he could not have been more helpful. Stuart was very professional throughout the process and very caring - that was very important as this is such a sensitive, emotive topic for us. Stuart explained everything carefully to my elderly mother in a way that she understood, in a non-condescending approach which worked well for us. If there were any questions, no matter how trivial, Stuart patiently went through things, so everything was clearly laid out for us.

We have recently been informed that the defendants have conceded that they are liable for our loss, and the amount of claim has been settled with little or no fuss for us. Stuart has done a great job! He liaised between us and the defendants and kept us up to date throughout the process.

As an aside, I really liked that we could meet remotely via Microsoft Teams around my work schedule, that made such a difference to be able to engage with Stuart from a distance without the pressure of travelling a long distance to meet up with him – I really liked this modern approach.
