This work covers the protection of computer networks and information systems, and the lawful handling of data, to prevent, respond to, and recover from cyber threats. A solicitor in this area helps clients design and implement security controls, assess risk, and navigate obligations under UK data protection law and information security regimes. They advise on incident response, breach notification, supplier security terms, and governance frameworks to manage data integrity and resilience. Practical issues include audits, cyber risk reporting, and securing contractual arrangements with third parties.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
The solicitor handles complex provisions, structures, and interactions: data protection regimes (UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018), the NIS Regulations, cyber incident response procedures, and security governance. They coordinate with IT, compliance, and procurement to ensure lawful processing, risk mitigation, and robust contractual protections around data handling, access controls, and breach containment.
