This area covers concerns about a child’s schooling, including how a school handles issues with teaching, discipline, special educational needs, admissions decisions, and complaints about school staff or policies. A solicitor in this field helps families raise formal complaints with the school or local authority, drafts and reviews complaint letters, prepares supporting documents, and represents or coordinates representation in mediation, investigations, and, if necessary, disciplinary or appeals processes.
What a solicitor handles in these matters
The solicitor handles the letters of complaint, compiles evidence (test results, email correspondence, safeguarding notes), and liaises with school governors, the local authority, and where relevant, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner or Ofsted. They assist with escalation to formal investigations, safeguarding processes, or independent reviews, and may prepare for outcomes such as remediation plans or academic adjustments.
