This area covers the process by which a student challenges a university decision about academic standing, progression, examination results or degree outcomes in England. A solicitor helps by advising on the internal appeal route, preparing and submitting the required grounds, compiling supporting evidence, and representing the client in meetings or hearings at the university or the appeals panel. If the internal route does not resolve the dispute, the solicitor can advise on the options for external review, including the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIAHE) where applicable.
The solicitor handles the formal grounds, evidence gathering, and procedural steps within university procedures, coordinates timelines, and navigates the interaction between academic departments and appeals panels, ensuring compliance with university regulations and any relevant guidance from the OIAHE. They may also advise on possibilities for mandating reconsideration or challenging outcomes through proportional procedures under the relevant policy framework.
