This area covers how farm workers are hired, paid and managed in England, including pay and contracts, working hours, holiday rights, sickness and dismissal. A solicitor in this field handles the relationship from recruitment through to termination, drafting and reviewing fixed-term or permanent contracts, and advising on minimum wage, holiday pay, zero-hours concerns, and health and safety obligations on agricultural employers and contractors. It can also involve grievances, disciplinary processes, and appeals where farms employ staff directly or via agencies.
Why this work is usually handled by a solicitor
Solicitors bring professional oversight to potential breaches of employment rights, including payroll compliance, disciplinary fairness, and lawful termination. They work alongside clients to ensure professional standards, handling settlements, disciplinary procedures, and representation where disputes go to tribunals or courts, with access to regulated client funds and professional indemnity protections.
