This area covers appeals from decisions in civil and certain other proceedings to the higher courts in England, primarily the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) and, where permitted, the Supreme Court. A solicitor in this field identifies appeal grounds, reviews the record, drafts grounds of appeal and skeleton arguments, and prepares the appellant’s bundles. They apply for permission to appeal, respond to cross-appeals, and conduct or instruct advocacy at hearings, including liaising with counsel and the relevant court on timetables and procedural steps.

What a solicitor handles in these matters

The solicitor handles the technical and procedural complexities of appellate work: pinpointing legal errors, formulating precise grounds of appeal, assembling and checking the record, and managing the chronology of the appeal, including permission applications and any cross-appeal considerations. They coordinate with counsel, prepare the necessary documents, and ensure compliance with Court of Appeal rules and Supreme Court practice.
