Conveyancing nightmare

Hugh James were the chosen solicitors by my new mortgage company. Absolutely appalling at feedback and contact. This is the eve of my exchange and I cant get an update. If you try to ring they wont take your call - the automated response lets you know that. There is no response to emails. The portal does not allow you to chat to anyone. What an awful service that shows contempt towards the client. Never use if you can avoid.

Worst conveyancing solicitors out there?

Trying to do a simple remortgage - totally straight forward. Done it many times before without issue. Had plenty of time to complete it, but because Hugh James are so poor - I'm moving onto the SVR which will costs £100's if not £1000's. -They have never responded to any email or call - I have made and sent many -Spent hours on hold- only to have the phone hung up on me -Never request anything they need -Do not acknowledge receipt of any documents once provided -I am only getting info from LMS If don't invest hours every single day chasing them- I doubt anything would ever get done. I simply can not believe how bad they are. Do what ever you can to use any other conveyancer out there. Hugh James are a joke.

The Sound of Hold Music

The good news is you will not need Julie Andrews after you have phoned Hugh James. The problem is the reason you won’t need Julie Andrews is because the hold music will be running around in your head for so long you won’t hear the sound of music from the hills!!! 3 hours 13 minutes on hold and I gave up!!!! I was calling on behalf of my clients, I am a mortgage broker, they are using Hugh James because it was part of the free legal service from the lender we remortgaged with. However any future client that will be allocated to Hugh James I will be strongly recommending not to use.

Defended a landlord they were aware was in the wrong

These solicitors defended my landlord in a disrepair claim that was mold and damp, during that time they came across the fact that I had been sleeping downstairs, my disabled son in the dining room, when I came here 14 years ago I said we slept downstairs and they have been aware ever since they that is curo collected sensitive information on me and used that to end the disrepair case saying I was unfit and in no condition to instruct a solicitor, Then the bullying started for me to move upstairs that was because it was a deathtrap with no outer door and these solicitors knew that. Their behavior was throughout cryable they are a disgrace, however, they successfully won. Now I have to move have lost everything as the readings were taken by the landlord above when the problem was further down and I have to relocate with nothing and no money to do it. utterly no scruples at all They came across a highly illegal situation and sat there and did nothing to help me and my disabled son.

Avoid if possible

Involegal were appointed by my lender to complete my remortgaging. A few days before completion I got an invoice for £84 (Parasitic as I wasn't informed about this charge) to transfer the funds to my bank account ( which is currently free of charge between all UK banks for all UK bank customers). After complaining that the charges were extortionate, they said I can avoid the charge if they post a check to me which I accepted. The check should have been posted the next day after completion, 5 days later I haven't received the check.

The commercial property department in the Cardiff office have achieved successful outcomes for three major financial transactions in my life. Over the course of five years, Richard, Natalie and Jess have consistently been responsive and proactive at the moments where it matters most, with a successful outcome with even the worst of external factors. My personal mentality is to remain non formal and friendly- they happily mirrored this, but on rare occasions where a firm stance was needed it was a delight to see them activate solicitor-mode and bust out with formal documents against oppressing parties. Don't let the slow onset fool you- once your case is fully in their sights they most certainly have your back.

POTTER REES DOLAN are relentless in the pursuit of the very best outcome for you. They really are SPECIALISTS in SERIOUS INJURIES & have a real insight into an individual’s needs. I sought these guys out after dismissing the Solicitor we were with for 4 years because of mismanagement & neglected duties. My Husband sustained multiple injuries, including brain damage when he was hit off his motorcycle. We are not greedy people, but with an uncertain future ahead of us, I knew what we were being asked to accept from the first Solicitors, was in no way good enough. POTTER REES DOLAN leapt right in & secured 4 times the final compensation figure. This making a solid financial basis for the future & to build on for the years to come. Ever grateful.

Submitted a hearing claim 2 years ago got told last September (2020) they had all the nessacery information to decide where to go next and would be in contact soon still no word back 5 months on. When i chased up as too where they was at i was greeted with a rather rude welcoming where the individual i was speaking to decided to gloat and boast about how much their hourly charge was and that my request was inadequate for her attention. Boycot these as there is clearly issues within the company and customer service training days are very much needed.

Quite possibly the worst legal company I have ever dealt with. You just cannot contact them at all. Documents seem to go missing in the post, and when you try and speak to them to trace them you can't get through on the phone, emails aren't replied to and subsequently our mortgage application has taken 3 months, costing us money each day. I would not use Natwest again for a mortgage as this is their choice of legal firm.

Hi Ceri. I'm very sorry to hear you've had difficulty getting through to discuss your remortgage. You mention NatWest in your message which means your case will be being handled by our sister company, Involegal. As you may be aware, Involegal has recently received an unprecedented and unexpected high volume of new remortgage cases from one of its lender clients. The team is working around the clock to process the vast number of cases it has received from the lender client and invariably this is tying up many of the case workers meaning the team can't always respond as quickly as they would like. It sounds as if the remortgage is currently going through - can you send us your reference number and property address so we can forward on to the team at Involegal and ask them to look into this for you. info@hughjames.com. Thank you

Looking at the past reviews, which we so wished we had, our experience with these so called solicitors is an absolute shambles like so many others. It was a straight forward remortgage which has taken an unnecessary amount of time. We can't get through to anyone, the mortgage portal they provide has had the same message for several weeks and in the meantime, our mortgage interest on a standard variable is going up by the day. Even the senior mortgage advisor at Natwest admitted that she couldn't get through to them. How long does it take for the solictors to get a redemption figure from a bank? Three weeks so far! Do we not live in the computerised world? And yes to the person who answered these reviews. We would like to speak to you about our remortgage case. That's of course if we can get through in the first place. And yes we will be filing an official complaint about you to the solictors complaint board. And yes we will be pushing Natwest for a refund in solictors fees. YOU HAVENT GIVEN US ANY KIND OF SERVICE. YOU WERE APPOINTED BY NATWEST TO REPRESENT OUR BEST INTERESTS AS THE CUSTOMER. YOU HAVE COST US HUNDREDS OF POUNDS SO FAR IN INTEREST. Dated 26/11/2019. We will update other reviewers when/if we get a reply back to this review. We're not expecting it though.Hugh James or who ever replies to these reviews, surprise us! And for once be professional! Yes we are very fed up and upset.

Never even got to speak to anyone.

Filled in their ''contact us'' form onljne on 7/04/25. The advert says they will get straight back to you. On 15/04/26 I rang to say no one had been in touch so the person on the phone arranged for someone to ring me at 12 o'clock on 16/04/26. Needless to say no one rang. So I rang again on 16/04/26 at 2pm and was told someone would ring me back in the next 45mins. Guess what.? I think this is an omen to NOT use Hugh James.

Lack of Communication

I instructed Hugh James on a No Win, No Fee clinical negligence case following the loss of my baby at Lewisham Hospital due to medical malpractice. The case has been ongoing for around three years. Unfortunately, despite the extremely sensitive nature of this bereavement case, I experienced over two months of complete silence from my solicitor. Emails and phone calls were not returned, which caused significant distress and concern about the handling of my claim. I expected compassion, transparency, and basic communication. Sadly, this was not my experience.

Clinical Negligence

Three years to get almost nothing

Three years ago I started an action for clinical negligence against a GP. It was a "No-Win-No-Fee" action. Of course the famous phrase "No-Win-No-Fee" is not what most lay people think it is. It is a Condition Fee Agreement. You take out an After The Event insurance policy at the beginning. It's there to guarantee the huge legal fees that solicitors charge. If you lose then you pay nothing and get nothing. If you "win" then the premium is deducted from your award and a maximum of 25% Success Fee is also deducted. This is okay, but only so long as you actually WIN and the other side pay out proper compensation. Hugh James moved at the pace of an asthmatic snail on sedatives. Endless emails followed. Worst of all, they engaged a fantastically expensive neurologist, Dr Oliver Foster, who was a superb expert witness not just for me but also for the defence. Thus NHS Resolution, got away with offering a paltry £10,000, which after deductions as mentioned ended up as £7500. My actual medical expenses caused by this GP were approaching £6000, so I in effect ended up with £1500 - after three long years of stressful legal action. I would avoid them for this sort of litigation.

Wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy

READ REVIEWS BEFORE YOU USE THIS SERVICE! Hugh James has been dealing with the probate of my late grandmother’s estate and have taken over 2 and a half years to process. As part of the estate I have been left a property which took 2 years to sign over to me as a benefactor and the moment that happened I was slapped with all the outstanding bills and have been told that as they are in my name, it’s now my responsibility and they are still holding a sizeable amount of money in their possession and I seem to have to chase them for updates on this frequently! This company has made a hard time even harder for myself and my family. I regret that my grandmother ever used this company and I’m sure she would be too! 2024- still no further along in the process and awaiting inheritance payments! I am disgusted by the service of this company and a property in Spain which has not been checked in 5.5 years. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE! They prolong the process to build up interest on your money! I am currently dealing with my 5th case manager and each is as bad as the last. 6 YEARS LATER - Hugh James hadn't even sent a death certificate to the relevant bodies after I was assured it was done years ago! I have now raised a second complaint to their complaints department after being assured that the head of the team took over my case to finally transfer the rest of an estate, only for it to drop back down to associates who had already mishandled the case. After the first complaint, they admitted that their service was poor and refunded me a whole £125 when a foreign property has incurred charges due to not being transferred or foreign solicitors being updated. I wouldn't wish these guys on my worst enemy! Please note they do not respond to emails or google reviews, probably because that person is "out of office" too!

Contentious Probate: After dealing with Hugh James as executors in contentious probate I do NOT recommend this company. A zero is too high. 13 months nothing resolved, Excuses for delays. The solicitor left the company- who was dealing with our case, for months we weren’t told. This has caused delays in court application. So much angst & stress, Not warranted & certainly NOT appreciated!!! It appears they just want to add to your lawyers bill with their negligence.

I would highly recommend Hugh James and specifically Sophie Nicol (Solicitor, Serious Injury). Sophie supported my family and I through a 4-year long claim following my young daughter sustaining an injury. The claim was finally settled with an extremely favourable result and throughout the whole process, Sophie has been supportive and clear, acting as our advocate and advisor throughout the process which has been invaluable when navigating the unfamiliar and peculiar legal system. Thank you for all the support.

I started my claim with Hugh James in 2018 and from the start I was informed and kept up to date on my hearing claim, then when Covid hit and everything seemed to go really slow but I know that Hugh James was doing a lot of work in the background gathering all my previous history, this had helped me a lot when I was looking at going to the Supreme Court, Nikolai and his team have helped me get to where I am now and have also got me a bigger claim than I ever expected. So I would like to thank all who have helped me at Hugh James

probably one of my worst decisions engaging Hugh james solicitors, it has been five years of dealing with multiple solicitors, one even leaving the company and we were not informed, made a complaint due to the bill being 3 times more than estimate. Now taking to the ombudsman due to no resolution. Will only promise or apologize by phone so there is no comeback. Avoid avoid avoid,

A representative from Hugh James responded to this review

Hi Gary We’re sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the service you received. At Hugh James, we take all feedback very seriously and would really value the chance to understand your concerns in more detail. The best way to do this is by getting in touch through our complaints procedure, which you can find here: https://www.hughjames.com/policies-notices/complaints-policy/. This will ensure your concerns are directed to the right team who can look into them properly. Kind regards, George

I contacted Hugh James about 5 days ago to enquire about engaging them. They have not bothered to respond at all - not even an acknowledgement of receipt. Despite a personal recommendation, I am now reluctant to use them if they are so disorganised as to not respond to new business enquiries. I see several poor reviews complaining about the same thing - so it seems they are also unable to fix recurring problems. This seems very amateurish.

A representative from Hugh James responded to this review

Hi Rich. I'm sorry to read that you're having trouble reaching us. We'd like to look into this further for you but in order to do this we'll need some more information. Please can you email reviews@hughjames.com with more information on your query and contact details. Please include 'Google Review' and your name in the email subject line. We'll make sure it's passed onto the team to contact you directly. Regards, George
