This work covers claims where an employee suffers detriment or is dismissed for a protected reason, such as discrimination or a protected act, under UK law. A solicitor handles investigations, drafts and files an Employment Tribunal claim, gathers witness evidence, and may negotiate settlements or pursue hearings. They advise on evidence collection, appeal routes, and compliance with time limits, guiding the client through ACAS early conciliation and potential remedies from the tribunal.
A solicitor manages the factual and legal complexity: identifying protected characteristics, assembling documentary and witness evidence, drafting pleadings, negotiating settlements, and presenting the case at Employment Tribunal hearings. They navigate evidential thresholds, possible cross-examination, and any remedies including reinstatement or compensation, while ensuring compliance with procedural rules and timetables.

Tagged solicitors Nicole Brendel and Owen John
The advice I have been given for my dispute has been carefully handled by Partner Owen John and more recently Associate Nicole Brendel. I have found Nicole to be clear in her answers to my many questions. Through the work that she and Owen have done I have been able to navigate through to successfully lodge my claim in a way that I believe to be the best it can be so far. Nicole was detailed and carried all the information effectively to help me with my documents and submission. In their overall support through my case so far, it’s not just been about meeting deadlines but I have an understanding of what I need to do going forward and in dealing with past processes. It has taken some of the trauma out of it because you know that Darwin Gray really know what they are doing especially with disability discrimination law. I definitely recommend Nicole, she was very helpful, skilled and professional. She went above and beyond when I needed it most in meeting a deadline and I am very thankful to her for that. I have worked with other solicitors before and Darwin Gray conducts their service to a standard that it should be especially with timely responses it makes all the difference.

Tagged solicitor Patrick Macken
Highly recommended. Patrick Macken took over my disability discrimination case with only around three weeks before our Employment Tribunal- Final Hearing. Given the complexity of the matter, I was initially concerned that there simply wouldn’t be enough time for him to fully understand the case and all of the issues involved. It was a very complex and hard-fought case, with a huge amount of evidence to work through. The respondents side had been represented by a very experienced barrister from the early stages of proceedings, including the preliminary hearing, judicial mediation and also represented at the final hearing. We had been living and breathing the case for over two years, so we knew just how much there was to take in. We initially had email communications, and we first met Patrick properly on the morning of 10 August 2026 - the day of the final hearing Despite having an enormous amount of material and countless potential questions available to him, Patrick identified the important issues and chose the right lines of cross-examination. He delivered his questions confidently, clearly and professionally, and exposed a number of important points that needed to be challenged. His final submission was equally impressive. He presented our case with confidence and clarity, referred to the relevant legal principles and applicable case law, and brought together the key issues in a way that was compelling and easy to follow. Most importantly, both my wife and I felt completely at ease with Patrick. He gave us confidence at a time when we really needed it. My husband even told Patrick during the hearing that his cross-examination was every bit as good as we would have expected from a barrister, and we genuinely meant it. We could not have asked for better representation at such an important stage of the case - all things considered. Thank you, Patrick, for your professionalism, preparation, confidence and, most importantly, for fighting our corner. We won! And we will always be grateful that Patrick and Jayne and all of the staff at Richard Nelson LLP Solicitors who helped us achieve it. Kim & Gary Foster
