I worked with Ashmira Kailash Moon at Duncan Lewis Solicitors. Throughout the case, she was incredibly attentive, even though we spoke different languages. She even arranged for an interpreter and we had multiple conference calls to better understand me and help with my case. We discussed in detail how to organize my documents and defense. She has a powerful writing style. Her explanations and ability to help you express yourself clearly are truly wonderful. She's a lawyer who knows exactly how to use words. She allows you to text her at any time of day, and if she's unavailable, she gets back to you as soon as possible to inform you about your request. She's absolutely a wonderful person. I visited Duncan Lewis' office in order to discuss a minor misunderstanding with the police. The solicitors agreed to take my case on. I made it clear from the start that the work that I wanted them to do for me was to defend me in a court hearing. I made it absolutely crystal clear that I did not do anything unlawful and that their role was to ensure that I was not adversely impacted from something that was not my fault. The lawyers lied, gaslighted and personally abused me. The lawyers had three months to prepare for the hearing that I had told them about. They even went to court to claim the legal aid that had originally been set aside from another law firm for this purpose. This firm had already done a lot of work to prepare for a trial. All that Duncan Lewis had to do was follow on from this and explain to the court that I had done nothing wrong. The first thing that Duncan Lewis did was arrange for me to be sent to prison. I had never been anywhere near a prison before and I certainly did not expect to have been sent to one at this juncture. I had been perfectly polite and reasonable in all of my correspondence with Duncan Lewis so for them to have adopted the view that I was a dangerous criminal in need of immediate incarceration made me feel very confused and distrustful. Once incarcerated, I was absolutely at the mercy of this firm of corrupt individuals. There were two lawyers who were supposed to be helping me. The way that both of these people spoke to me was highly insulting. One of these people made offensive comments about my handwriting - something that had absolutely no relevance to the fact or purpose of my incarceration. In my meeting at the prison, instead of discussing the hearing that I had asked the lawyers to arrange, the lead solicitor consumed my time trying to convince me that I have mental health problems- this was despite the fact that I do not have any mental health problems and that this had absolutely no relevance to the issue of whether I had been concerned with any criminal behaviour. It was April 2017 that I visited the office and the lawyer offered to defend me. The trial was scheduled for June 14. By this time, I had been in prison for 6 weeks, for no apparent reason. On the day of the hearing, it was apparent that the lawyers had done absolutely none of the work that I had asked them to do in order to prepare for a hearing. I was kept waiting in a court cell for several hours, waiting for my "solicitor" to explain to the court that I was ready for the hearing to go ahead. I said to the lawyer on several occasions that I was ready for the trial that I had been waiting for for 9 months to take place. The lawyer had absolutely no intention of defending me or of doing the job that she was being paid to do. The lawyer steadfastly refused to deliver my message to the court. The lawyer stated that I would be retained in prison indefinitely unless I said to the court that I was "guilty", even thought I knew that I was not "guilty". I went and I said to the court what she had told me to say, under the expectation that I would be able to speak to the court properly in my own time and explain that I had been forced to make this comment by the lawyer's ineptitude and her belligerent behaviour. However, there was no possible way for me to deliver a plea that was made of my own free will. I was, therefore, issued with two convictions, which came about as a result of the ineptitude of Duncan Lewis Solicitors, rather than anything that I had done myself.

Duncan Lewis have been supporting me with a CAO and other issues for the last 18 months; Alexia was my main port of call, with Elliot supporting me during court hearings. Throughout the entire period I have felt listened to, supported and heard, which when dealing with a co parent who is abusive and narcissistic makes such a difference. I communicated with Alexia mainly via email but there were occasions especially during moments of distress I would call, she managed these calls with kindness and sympathy but kept to the facts. I was kept involved and informed throughout the process and these communications increased before and after court hearings to ensure I understood the process and plan moving forward. I was informed whenever Alexia would be unavailable due to leave and was signposted to Premal who was also extremely helpful. The professionalism and legal knowledge of all the staff that supported at Duncan Lewis was thorough and precise. They ensured I had a full understanding of the court process, and what the legal language meant, this meant I was able to verbalise my thoughts and feelings clearly and without fear of judgement or ridicule. Moving forward, if there is another issue that needs legal support I will not hesitate to reach out to Duncan Lewis, and I will feel reassured and confident that they will manage the case effectively and professionally with my best interests at the forefront. I contacted this firm for help with an asylum Legal Aid case. At first, I was told they may be able to assist depending on my financial situation. I provided the requested documents, but later received a response saying they could not help and that Section 95 support was required. I also sent a follow-up email asking for clarification and whether any solicitor could assist, but I did not receive any response for over a month. Overall, I found the communication inconsistent and unclear, and it left me without proper guidance at a very difficult time.
