Over the course of 5 years, we appointed Higgs & Sons to act as a professional deputy. Unfortunately, our experience was consistently marked by poor communication, significant delays, and a lack of professionalism. Despite the firm charging approximately £12,000–£15,000 per year for what were simple administrative duties, timely responses to calls or emails were rare. Although Nicholas Moxon was named as the appointed deputy, we did not receive a single email or telephone call from him during the entire period. All communication was instead routed through Claire Whittall and Katie Chance, both of whom were frequently unresponsive and, at times, discourteous. On one occasion, after receiving no replies, I drove nearly two hours to the firm’s office, only to be handed documents by a receptionist while the relevant staff members declined to meet. The deputyship accounts were also significantly behind schedule—approximately two years overdue. Given the level of fees being charged, it is essential that these accounts are scrutinised by the Senior Courts Costs Office to ensure they are legitimate and proportionate. Following my mother’s passing, we expected a degree of sensitivity and efficiency. Instead, even simple enquiries regarding arrangements for a modest funeral required repeated follow ups. The funeral directors were not paid promptly, and we were again left to chase for updates. Despite the minimal communication during this period—amounting to only a few emails—Higgs & Sons sought to charge £3,389.40 for “extensive involvement.” In correspondence, Katie Chance stated: “Following your mother’s death there was extensive involvement to assist the executors in understanding the current position and to try and progress matters. The work completed from the date of death to date currently stands at £3,389.40… However, given the value of the estate, I am happy to agree to a 10% reduction of these fees as a gesture of goodwill.

When my elderly Grandmother was receiving palliative care at home two absent family members appeared to help to look after her. My Mother who lived with her and was her sole carer was suddenly set upon and we were locked out of her property. The Police and Social Services did nothing to help us. We then received a sympathy card through the post.. She had passed away. We then discovered that she has been financially abused by people that she thought she could trust. Her property was left to my Mother. We had to break in to discover that they had looted the place, everything had gone. After several failed attempts at contacting her Doctor (my own GP) to ask what had happened I was informed that this firm would help get that information for me. I felt positive after an introductory meeting here. I have no other family to turn to, no support, no help. This firm was our only hope. I have since being bombarded with bills, threats of bailiffs, court action and debt collecting companies. I have been forced into setting up an account that I shouldn’t have simply due to lack of communication being unable to ask or get advice from anyone. My Mother is vulnerable and suffering from a complete mental breakdown. I have received no communication with anyone since December 2024. I tried to reach out to one of our solicitors recently but was told my query would be passed onto the other solicitor who is handling our case. My Mother has paid this man, we received the bills from him. After asking I received no response again. We then received an e-mail stating that his hourly rates would be increasing. Nobody has responded after being told my query would be passed on as this was in November. I can honestly say I have been pushed to the brink and have been at my wits end with all of this. Not only is my experience absolutely horrendous but the authorities and the people who I thought were here to help me are letting me down also. This is almost as dispiriting as the events that have occurred. I am devastated at the complete lack of support and feel that everyone was extremely helpful and supportive until we signed up. Now we are in the dark and have been for a long time. I’m devastated and completely broken. I don’t think people realise just what their service means to people and the impact (whether it’s good or bad) this can have on their lives. I’m even sorry that I’ve had to write this review to be honest. Ps I gave two stars as the lady that did my Mothers Power of Attorney was lovely and so helpful. Everything that a solicitor should be in my opinion.

A Frustrating and Mismanaged Experience. My time with Higgs and Sons was a disappointing and frustrating experience. The lack of consistent attention to my case was a primary concern. It became clear that my matter was not a priority for the firm, as it felt like other cases were constantly being prioritized over mine. A milestone was needed to change solicitors as traction was not being made to the case. This created a complete lack of continuity, and despite agreeing on a clear path forward with the new solicitor, the strategy was not followed. This breakdown in communication and execution demonstrated a fundamental failure to put my best interests first. The poor management of my case not only added a layer of stress to an already difficult situation but also resulted in additional, unnecessary costs. I would not recommend this firm to anyone seeking dedicated and reliable legal representation.
